a rare survival. The 24th Infantry Regiment was organized in 1869. All of the soldiers were either veterans from the 38th and 41st Regiments of the United States Colored Troops or freed slaves. From 1869 to 1898, the 24th served throughout the Texas frontier, fighting Indians and outlaws, performing scouting patrols, guarding posts, and escorting supply trains. In 1898, the 24th was deployed to Cuba and fought at San Juan Hill, the bloodiest battle of the Spanish-American War.
