a rare promotion for a non-commissioned officer of the corps d'afrique, made up of the first black soldiers to enter the war. The Corps d'Afrique was formed by General Banks under General Orders No 40. These were property-owning free people of color. Free mixed-race people had developed as a third class in New Orleans since the colonial years.
