Additional Details

Several other examples of this photograph have survived with period manuscript captions; one reads "Taylor, slave of Col. Hamilton, as he arrived at the fort." It was produced in conjunction with another image of the same boy in uniform as "Taylor, young drummer boy for 78th Colored Troops." Most of the other known examples of this carte-de-visite have no photographer's marks. This one was produced by Whipple of 96 Washington Street in Boston. See Kurt Luther, "Investigating the Iconic Portraits of a USCT Drummer Boy," in Military Images Digital, 9 April 2021.
