Additional Details

Valuable for the numerous first-hand accounts of the colored population of the city and the terrible abuses visited on them by crowds of angry whites who blamed them for the war. Incidents included hangings, rapes, and the burning of a colored orphan asylum. These New York draft riots still remain the worst in the city's history.
