Additional Details

We wish we could tell you that this manumission was the start of a happy story. Service records show that Leonidas Gray was drafted into the 30th United States Colored Troops in June 1864. A week after this document secured his freedom, he was sent to the military hospital for being "insane", and died of "insanity" two days after that.
