Additional Details

a wonderful and most unusual photograph. The background is a photographer's painted studio backdrop, showing a scene outside a tent, with a Springfield rifle, and a powder and ball leather case hung next to it. A wonderful and most unusual photograph of a seated African American corporal, looking up at a white soldier in scout's clothing and slouch hat. The latter is leaning on what appears to be an army issue Springfield rifle." Just behind the black soldier over his shoulder, one can see a portion of a Mississippi paddle-wheeler. This might give a hint as to where this was shot.
