Additional Details

The 19th United States Colored Troops was organized in Maryland in late 1863, and saw duty at the Siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, and the Appomattox campaign. They were one of the first Union regiments to enter newly occupied Richmond in April 1865. Offered here:

Muster roll of Company H, January through April 1865. 88 enlisted men and 3 officers are listed, along with the date and place of joining the regiment. About half of them have additional notes: one man charged for a lost bayonet, two detailed for service as blacksmiths, one docked pay after a court martial, another deserted but captured, . Private Felix Brown was out wounded in the hospital since the disastrous 30 July Battle of the Crater, and Private Isaac Waters was out wounded since the 18 August Battle of Globe Tavern. In addition, "colored" civilian servants for two officers are named. Petersburg, VA, 30 April 1865.

Muster roll of Company C for November and December 1865. Quite worn with separations at folds and failed tape repairs. Similar data to the first roll. On this roll, the soldiers have signed for their pay by mark. 5 soldiers are listed as deceased, with later notes on payment of arrears extending through 1885. Brownsville, TX, 31 December 1865.

Muster-out roll of Lieutenant James O. Blakeley, 18 November 1864; and pay vouchers for 4 officers, each naming a Black civilian servant, March-June 1865.
