Additional Details

a rare piece of music written and self-published by a member of the 54th massachusetts volunteers, and dedicated to Robert Gould Shaw the fallen white colonel who led the 54th into battle. Henry Jones was a member of the noted 54th Regiment, the first African-Americans to see combat in the Civil War. The first assault on the Morris Island, SC battery known as Fort Wagner took place on July 10th 1863. Jones paid for the printing and publication of this piece of music. He probably had an arrangement not unlike that of the modern "vanity" publishers.
