Additional Details

An exceptionally detailed letter relating an incident in which a black soldier was shot and killed. The writer praises the black soldiers in his regiment, saying how fiercely they fight and how brave, but all the while referring to them as "niggers." He then relates how one of the black soldiers went into a hall where some white sailors were having a party. When told to leave, the black soldier, refused, calling a sailor a "white son of a bitch." The words were no sooner out of his mouth than he was shot.
