Additional Details

The 27th United States Colored Infantry regiment was formed in Delaware, Ohio in January 1864. They fought in the 30 July 1864 Battle of the Crater, among other battles. This roll lists 104 soldiers and 3 officers in Company F, plus servants for 2 officers. The lines for 2 additional deceased soldiers are unfortunately obscured by early repair tape.

Privates John Clark, James Hammond, and Henry Richard are all listed as "wounded in hos. since July 30th," the date of the Crater fight. Many other soldiers are noted as sick in the hospital, and Private Lemuel Winn is listed as "sick in hos. since July," with additional notes added in 1869 explaining that he had already died in the hospital on 24 October 1864 at the time the roll was drawn up.
