Additional Details

A famous caricature by Thomas Nast, the most famous American political cartoonist of the 19th century. This image appeared right after Lincoln gave the order to allow colored men to volunteer for the depleted Army fighting the War in the South. It appeared first in the pages of Harper's Weekly, then Frank Leslie's Magazine, and then it entered the realm of the carte de visite. Had it appeared today, it would have been the viral subject of a Nast[y] tweet.
