Additional Details

two very rare and very possibly unique confederate covers with their stamps uncanceled. One cover depicts Jefferson Davis seated on a bale of cotton, with the following caption "Cotton defeated Packenham (a reference to the battle of New Orleans), and cotton will defeat 'Ape Lincoln.'" The second cover showing a well-dressed African bears the caption "Black Republican." Both of these covers have uncanceled Confederate stamps. Of the first cover, no "whole" examples are known; the second is possibly a unique example. Provenance: a private collection, obtained from the Gordon Bleuler Collection.
