Additional Details

a rare union cover in three states. A dialogue between Britain's "John Bull" saying to "Nap"(oleon) "The nicest article in the world, to clothe mankind." And "Nap" replies "Grain, mon Cher, demands a higher consideration at present." John Bull is shown holding a "cat o seven tails" in his right hand, while his right foot rests on the back of a beaten slave; his right heel on the slave's ankle. Replete with symbolism, John Bull wears an elaborate crown of Palmetto leaves, the symbol of South Carolina. From the Gordon Bleuler collection of Civil war covers.
