Single 4to sheet, folded to for four pages, written on all four sides, in pencil, with the original envelope including an unusual "Star of David" postal cancellation. "We are mounting guns and mortars every night. I guess there will be some music here in a few days. . .The fifty-fourth Mass is in our Brigade, only a week or two ago they were a full regiment [,] now they are not much larger than ours. The fight on James island in which they were the ones that sufferd. .then in the fight here on Saturday night when they charged on Fort Wagonner [,] they lost heavily. I believe the ninth Capt. Has command of the regiment. All the officers senior to him being either killed or wounded." The charge on Fort Wagner occurred on July 18th and was the first serious battle involving colored troops.
