Asher Johnson (circa 1830-1899) was a farmer born in New Brunswick, NJ who enlisted as a private in Company I, 22nd United States Colored Infantry in January 1864. The regiment served in the sieges of Petersburg and Richmond through the close of the war. with--cartes-de-visite of two white lieutenants from the same regiment, William H. Short of Company K and Robert W. Simpson of Company E, both signed on verso.
