Additional Details

The first and only Civil War infantry manual printed specially for the use of United States Colored Troops. Includes an introductory note by Secretary of War Stanton: "This system of United States Infantry Tactics, prepared under the direction of the War Department for the use of the colored troops of the United States Infantry, having been approved by the President, is adopted for the instruction of such troops." The text is otherwise very similar to the infantry manual prepared for the white troops in 1861. Includes 48 pages of drum beats and bugle-calls, followed by numbered plates for the "School of the Soldier" and "School of the Battalion." Not in Blockson or Afro-Americana.
