the very first newspaper report anywhere of the charge of the 54th regiment, led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw. The verso contains an account of the Battle of Fort Wagner that took place two days before. The article describes "the awful bombardment of Battery Wagner . . . a night assault upon our works . . . signal and bloody repulse of the foe." The report details the bombardment from the Union vessels including monitors and batteries on other islands. Of the black troops (the 54th Massachusetts) the report states, in part "The enemy advanced in two columns of about 3000 men each, the whole under the command of Brigadier General Strong. The column attacked our right and was composed partially of Negro troops."
