(MILITARY--CIVIL WAR--PATRIOTIC COVERS--CONFEDERATE.) Eight Star Confederate flag design with "Jeff. Davis/ A. H. Stephens," made by Wm. Rogers Stationers, Memphis Tenn. Unused. * [with] A Similar, Northern printers' response, or version dubbed the "Pirate Flag" inside the stars. The second cover bears two 3-cent brown Washington stamps, "Harpers' Ferry, April 17, 1862" cancel on the left corner of the stamp; some mounting remnants on reverse. Bearing a long pencil note on the reverse from the noted collector, Gordon Bleuler. Tennessee and Northeastern printers, circa 1861-1865

a rare pair of covers, from the collection of premiere philatelist gordon bleuler, with his pencil remarks on the reverse of the "pirate flag." The copying of designs by one side by the other was unusual, making this pair quite rare.
