During the Civil War, and especially as casualties mounted, the Government offered a bonus to those who volunteered; this payment was called "Bounty." Here Robert Whittington, an African-American, applied for and received his "bounty" payment of fifty dollars when he mustered out. Soldier listed in Moebs (Black Soldiers, Black Sailors, Black Ink) and the Roster of Union Soldiers, Colored Troops (Broadfoot, 1997).
