Additional Details

a rare broadside appeal to new york city's working class irish following the devastating draft riots of July 13-16. This broadside was gotten up by Sinclair Tousey (1818-1887) publisher and founder of the American News Company, three months after the melee. An abolitionist and staunch supporter of the President, Tousey hoped to persuade the working class Irishman to vote for Lincoln. Quotes from Daniel O'Connell, the 'Great Commoner' fell on deaf ears. The 'New York Irish American' urged its readers to vote for McClellan, and vote for him they did, causing a wave of prejudice against the Irish in the years that followed. Item 463 in the Barrett Lincoln Sale (Parke-Bernet, 1952.)
