Additional Details

The 371st Infantry Regiment was a segregated all-African American unit from South Carolina which went to France in April 1918. They were placed under the command of a French general, and performed heroically in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that September; almost half of their men were killed or wounded. Corporal Freddie Stowers became the only African-American soldier in the war to receive the Medal of Honor, although his recommendation was "misplaced" and the medal was not awarded until 1991. This medal was produced to honor the regiment by the firm of Henri Téterger, sculpted by Jules-Prosser Legastelois after a design by Samusson. The obverse shows the regimental crest surrounded by the names of their most important battles. On verso is a charging soldier superimposed over a plantation scene.
