Additional Details

A soldier bids farewell to his sweetheart as his flag-waving regiment marches behind him. Starting in late March 1918, just as recruits and draftees were filling the training camps and starting to arrive in large numbers in France, advertisements for this poster appeared throughout the Black press. One in the Kansas City Advocate called it "A beautiful patriotic picture in colors showing the negro troops ready for the front. It's a picture that will stir the patriotic heart of every negro. . . . Agents can make a mint of money. Every negro will buy" (29 March 1918).
