Additional Details

This scrapbook was kept by Julia M. Jackson of Louisville, KY, who enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in November 1942, reaching the rank of sergeant. She did much of her training at Fort Huachuca, AZ near the Mexican border, which had served as a base for African-American troops since at least 1916. Other stints included Des Moines, IA and Midland, TX. A clipping on the scrapbook's first page notes that she was one of the first three Louisville women to join the Corps. On the second page is the signature of boxer Joe Louis on a small scrap of paper captioned "Given to me by my Joe at Ft Huachuca, May 18 1943." A printed menu for her unit's 1942 Thanksgiving menu is signed by a dozen women, one writing "The world & race are very proud of you." Also included are greeting cards, newspaper clippings relating to Jackson and her fellow WACs, U.S.O. invitations, more than 20 insignia and patches collected from various units including her own sergeant stripes; and more. A few items at the end of the volume relate to Sergeant Jackson's postwar life in Louisville.
