Additional Details

The only World War Two poster we know of featuring Black women in the service. Approximately 6,500 Black women served in the Women's Army Corps, in segregated units which were mainly limited to transportation and mail sorting.

The Transportation WACS sought recruits in Puerto Rico as well as in the continental United States. Among the women who joined was Celina Báez, later known to history as the mother of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The artist of this poster was Vincent Varvaro, who also did the art for another WAC poster. One in OCLC (University of Maine); none traced at auction.
