Additional Details

Harry Floyd Lofton (1900-1978) joined the Massachusetts National Guard and then the 372nd Infantry, in 1926. He was the first African-American graduate of the Massachusetts Military Academy in 1929, finishing as a second lieutenant. He remained with the National Guard and with the Reserve until 1950, when he went to Japan to work on a project called "Operation Mercy." There are two albums of snapshots covering that period in Japan, as well as numerous other loose photographs, citations, medals, and year books: the 1939 Massachusetts National Guard year book, the 1941 372nd Infantry yearbook and the 1950 Fort Dix Yearbook. Lofton spent a total of 30 years in the service. He was a member of the Prince Hall lodge of the Masons. His certificate, and a copy of Charles Harris Wesley's History of the Prince Hall Masons, are present.
