Additional Details

Nathaniel Collins McLean (1815-1905) of Ohio had an eventful Civil War career, reaching the rank of Brigadier General (see lots 56, 62, and 75). After the war, he briefly practiced law in Ohio, raised sheep in Minnesota for almost twenty years, and then retired in 1885 to Bellport, Long Island, NY. These letters were written to his wife on an almost daily basis during what seem to be the brief periods when they were apart. They include 6 letters from Washington Courthouse, OH, November 1865 to January 1866; 34 letters written from Frontenac to his wife in Rochester, MN, April 1866 and May to August 1874; and 15 letters from Bellport while his wife was in Boston, September and October 1896.
