Additional Details

The Spanish publication of an important treaty variously known in English as Pinckney's Treaty, the Treaty of San Lorenzo, the Treaty of Madrid, or by its official title "Treaty of Friendship, Limits, and Navigation Between Spain and the United States." This treaty set the boundaries between what became Mississippi in the United States and the Spanish territories in present-day Florida and Louisiana. It also granted the United States joint navigation rights to the Mississippi River, which made possible the rapid expansion of American settlement and trade in the western states of Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The treaty went through at least 5 Spanish printings in 1796--at Madrid, Alcalá, Barcelona, Segovia, and Gerona. Priority is undetermined. We trace no other examples of this Gerona printing at auction, in OCLC, or in the bibliographies. Medina BHA 5765 (listing Madrid only); Palau 250427-II and 250428 (listing Madrid and Alcalá only); Reese, Federal Hundred 62; Sabin 96587 (listing Madrid only); not in Simón Palmer's Bibliografía de Cataluña.
