Additional Details

These volumes track sales at a general store in the riverboat boomtown of Cape Girardeau, MO. The owners were apparently Euen Y. McKee (1812-1849) and Joseph Rankin McLane (1799-1867) until 1839, when McKee became the sole proprietor--the later part of the ledger starts fresh with new accounts at this date. Among the items sold at this busy shop are saddles, bridles, and martingales, coon, fox, sheep, and deer skins, feathers, flasks, whiskey, cider, palm hats, tumblers, laudanum, tobacco, coffee, shoes, fabric, produce, chickens, nails, buckets, and knives. Numerous customers are noted as "black."
