One span of this bridge over the Missouri River collapsed in November 1879, plunging 18 railroad cars into the river, and sending 5 men to their deaths. Some of the wrecked cars can still be seen above the waterline in this haunting image. In the foreground, somberly-clad picnickers discuss their mortality.
