Additional Details

The second printing of the Monroe Doctrine as it appeared in Washington's semi-official newspaper. It was preceded only by the same paper's extremely rare broadside extra printing the previous day. The next day's 4 December edition appears much more frequently on the market.
The second page is devoted to the President Monroe's 2 December State of the Union Address, which introduced the Monroe Doctrine to the world. Near the top of the second column are the key words: "the American continents . . . are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers." Grolier Hundred, 33.
