Additional Details

McKnight operated a trading post at Fort Shaw in central Montana. The first and longest letter is from Fort Benton trader (and future Senator) Thomas C. Power, concerning the issuance of a trading license. The other two are from Indian agents at the Blackfeet Indian Reservation regarding supplies they had ordered. with--a receipt signed by Matthew Davenport for his pay as a teacher at the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon, September 1870.
