Additional Details

After the Kirtland Safety Society Bank failed to secure a banking charter, it was formally organized as a joint stock company under the name "Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Banking Company" on 2 January 1837. A small number of its existing banknotes were altered with small stamps which changed the Bank to an "Anti-Banking Co." Also altered were the designations of cashier and president; the Anti-Banking notes were signed as secretary and treasurer.
