Additional Details

Bedford was a gentile fisherman living on Beaver Island among the offshoot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints led by King James J. Strang. Bedford here testifies to being punished with 45 lashes at Strang's command, and all of his property confiscated. His crime was being employed by a firm hostile to Strang. Bedford also expresses his belief that "James J. Strang does direct and incite his followers and those over whom he can exercise any control to acts of theft and pillage and wanton destruction," describing two such incidents.
