first edition, first issue. In 1838, Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs ordered: "The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State, if necessary." The author John Portineus Greene (a brother-in-law of Brigham Young) was appointed to gather documentary evidence of the ensuing repression, some of which he witnessed personally, and which he had published in about July 1839.
