Additional Details

first edition. The first official account of the 27 June 1844 murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. It begins with a summary of their arrest and killing headed "Awful Assassination! The Pledged faith of the State of Illinois stained with innocent blood by a Mob!" This is followed by statements by attorneys Hugh T. Reid and James W. Woods, a statement by Governor Ford, and proclamations by General M.R. Deming. Crawley calls this broadside "the first official Mormon statement on the tragedy."
Little has been found on the original owner of this broadside. D.H. Dustin and his wife were at Kirtland in 1837, when they were expelled for following the schismatic prophet James Colin Brewster. Other Dustins were prominent early members, including Cyrena Dustin Merrill (1817-1906). Crawley lists 6 extant copies of the broadside in libraries. Byrd, Illinois Imprints 885; Crawley 226 (calls this the second state, with the corrected name "Woods" in column 5); Flake 5731; Streeter sale IV:2278. The last copy we trace at auction was in the 1966 Streeter sale for $1,000. As a point of comparison, Swann sold a nice first edition Book of Mormon that year for $210.
