Additional Details

Philip Margetts (1829-1914) was one of the three professional actors in Salt Lake City's first dramatic company in 1851. Tullidge's "History of Salt Lake City" recalls that "in his line of comedy, farce and comic song" he "established himself as a public favorite" (pages 736-738), and he remained one of the city's most beloved actors into the 20th century. This photo bears a Savage & Ottinger backmark, and is captioned in manuscript "Phil. Margetts, the Comedian, 1866."

Asaneth Ann "Annie" Adams (1848-1916) was born to parents who had accompanied Brigham Young to Salt Lake City. She made her stage debut in 1865 and was soon the city's leading actress. Her daughter Maude Adams went on to national fame as an actress. This photo bears an inked Savage & Ottinger stamp dated 25 September 1868, and is captioned in pencil "Miss Annie Adams, Actress, Salt Lake City, Utah."
