Additional Details

Deed from Asael Smith of Tunbridge, VT to James Adams of 42 acres in Tunbridge, signed by Asael Smith as grantor, his eldest son Jesse Smith as witness, and two others. One page, 11½ x 9 inches, with docketing on verso. Tunbridge, VT, 29 April 1805 (recorded 11 October). Asael Smith (1744-1830) was Joseph Smith Jr.'s grandfather. Shortly before his death, he was given a Book of Mormon; a grandson recalled that "my grandfather Asael fully believed the Book of Mormon, which he read nearly through." The signature here is a close match for a 1799 "Asael Smith letter and genealogy record" held by the Church History Library.

Deed from Anna Adams of Tunbridge to James Adams, signed by Jesse Smith and his wife Hannah Smith as witnesses, to dower rights. One page, 13 x 7¾ inches, with docketing on verso. Tunbridge, 10 September 1814. Jesse Smith (1768-1853) had accompanied his young nephew Joseph Smith, Jr. to Salem, MA circa 1812 to help him recover from a leg operation. His wife was Hannah Peabody Smith (1773-1848).

With--a commission to tax collector Amos Allen, Tunbridge, VT, 10 July 1800, with no direct connection to the Smiths.
