Additional Details

The official organ of the Latter-Day Saints was printed in remote Fillmore for four months in 1858, during a period when the Mormon settlers withdrew from the Salt Lake area in the face of a United States Army incursion. This issue includes several editorials against "Mr. Buchanan's religious war against Utah." It also insists that Joseph C. Ives's explorations of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River were being conducted to find a route to Salt Lake "for the express purpose of oppressing, corrupting and murdering American citizens . . . solely on account of their mode of worship!!!"
