RECIRCULATED BY BRIGHAM YOUNG (MORMONS--CURRENCY.) $5.00 obsolete banknote issued by the Kirtland Safety Society Bank. Engraved banknote, 3 x 7 inches, #1273 made out to "P Smith(?)"with possibly secretarial signature of Joseph Smith Jr. and signatures of Sidney Rigdon, Heber C. Kimball, Brigham Young, and N.K. Whitney; moderate toning, a few creases, minor wear on top edge; faint embossed "LDS" seal in upper left. Kirtland, OH, 1 March 1837
The Kirtland banknotes went out of circulation when the bank failed in late 1837. However, a small number were recirculated in Salt Lake City in 1849, validated by fresh signatures: Whitney's near the deceased Joseph Smith, Kimball's overwriting the excommunicated Rigdon, and Brigham Young in the blank area above Kimball. The small manuscript B under the serial number is the mark of banker Thomas Bullock. Provenance: Quality Sales auction, 12 September 1973, lot 1413, to the family of the consignor.
