Additional Details

The Kirtland banknotes went out of circulation when the bank failed in late 1837. However, a small number were recirculated in Salt Lake City in 1849, validated by fresh signatures: Whitney's near the deceased Joseph Smith, Kimball's overwriting the excommunicated Rigdon, and Brigham Young in the blank area above Kimball. The small manuscript B under the serial number is the mark of banker Thomas Bullock. Provenance: Quality Sales auction, 12 September 1973, lot 1413, to the family of the consignor.
