Additional Details

The flageolet is a woodwind instrument similar to the recorder and tin whistle; it largely passed out of fashion after the early 19th century. One in ESTC, at the Newberry Library; none traced at auction.

ESTC assigns authorship to Thomas Greeting, who died in 1682, apparently assuming that it was a new American edition of his 1675 London publication, "The Pleasant Companion: or New Lessons and Instructions for the Flagelet." That work was much longer, had introductory text not found here, and used a completely different type of musical notation. The musical selections in the present work are also different--particularly a tune called "The American" on page 7.
