In 1947, when he was still touring the country with his orchestra, Welk first wrote to the publishers of the relentlessly upbeat Sunshine Magazine, requesting a subscription. He later noted that "whenever I do find a spare minute, the Sunshine seems to be the first thing I pick up." Over the years, he engaged in various promotional ventures with the magazine, and developed an enduring friendship with the publisher. Henrichs also published Welk's fan club magazine, Sweet Notes of Friendship. Welk's letters to Henrichs are filled with updates on his family and professional life.
