Sun Ra, born Herbert Sonny Blount (1914-1993) pioneered what is called "collective improvisation," a technique sometimes heard in the music of Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. Sun Ra put together his famous "Arkestra" in 1953, fusing Afri-Cuban rhythms with a bop and traditional big band sound. This poster was for a concert at Michigan State University in 1977.
