Additional Details

Harry T. Burleigh (1866-1949), the composer of the famous gospel song "Deep River," and over 100 other songs, writes on his music and that of other "serious" Negro composers. He assures the recipient that there are serious Negro composers who "have not been led away from their folk songs by an easy success in rag-time," an obvious allusion to Scott Joplin.
