inscribed and signed by harry t. burleigh, (1866-1949), composer and vocalist. Burleigh wrote one of the most famous and enduring spirituals, "Deep River." The photo bears a two-bar quotation from that piece. The book that this photograph is tipped into consists of a collection of stories of African Americans who succeeded in life "In Spite of the Handicaps."
