Additional Details

Duke Ellington together with Billy Strayhorn, composed the musical play, which was aired on May 8, 1957 on The U.S. Steel Hour. The Contract, on Theater Guild letterhead, is countersigned by Armina Marshall, a principal of the Theater Guild. In addition to writing the piece, Ellington also presented and narrated the hour long show. The work tells the history of jazz from its African roots to America and starred actress Carmen Delavallade.
