Additional Details

Flyer for an unusual concert performance in that it included a recitation of Mr. Gilbert's "Dash for Liberty, My personal Reminiscences of Slavery. My escape from bondage with a number of other slaves, before the Great Rebellion, pursued by Savage Bloodhounds. Given for the further education of his son, a recent graduate of the Manual Training School of Philadelphia, Pa, to go South as a teacher of his race." The foot of this flyer has a space to be filled in for wherever the group might be performing. Included in Gilbert's repertoire were poems by Paul Lawrence Dunbar. It is probably impossible to count the number of musical groups that laid claim to being "The Original Jubilee Singers." The post Civil War nation was hungry for authentic plantation music and tales of "Slavery Days."
