first edition, inscribed and signed. by Handy on the front free end-paper: "To Walter [??] Lederberg Esq. ?? 1/16 1946." Handy lost his sight due to an accident in 1943 when he fell or was pushed off of a subway platform. As a result, his subsequent handwriting is quite difficult to read.
