Additional Details

a scarce piece of music, inspired by a slave narrative. The identity of the author of the Story of the Life of John Anderson, the Fugitive Slave is unknown. The title-page lists no author, though the text gives the editor as Harper Twelvetrees, a British abolitionist. Anderson killed a bounty hunter in 1853, and fled to Canada. The American government pursued the case and he was placed on trial in Canada, where he was exonerated. A copy of this engraving is in the Gilder Lehrman Collection.
