Additional Details

Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (1869-1933) had been singing professionally for some years before she was dubbed the "Black Patti" by a New York Opera critic, who compared her considerable vocal talent to that of the Italian diva Adelina Patti. Black Patti performed widely at home and abroad, even giving a performance for President Benjamin Harrison. It is surprising then that only a handful of images of her seem to have survived. The present one can be identified by Sissieretta's face and the necklace which she also wears in an 1889 poster in the Library of Congress Performing Arts Collection.
