Local 274 was an all black music union, founded in 1935, after black musicians were denied entry into local 77. It was the last entirely black musicians' union in the country. This directory is a virtual Who's Who in jazz, listing among others: John Coltrane, Clifford Brown, Dizzie Gillespie, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons, Bill Doggett, and Slim Gaillard.
